A Roaring Success! The 12th UpperCrust Food & Wine Show

The UpperCrust Food& Wine Show - India’s biggest, finest and most successful food and wine event, in its 12th year now - was inaugurated on Dec 5 at 11 am at the World Trade Centre, by three powerful women in the industry, to live music rendered by talented folk artists. Chocolatier of Fantasie fame Zeba Kohli, actress and gourmet entrepreneur Perizaad Zorabian of Zorabian Foods and of course, conceptualiser and curator of the Show, editor and publisher of UpperCrust Farzana Contractor, thus ushered in the Show.

Right from the time the gates were thrown open, at 10 am till closing time on 7th Dec, the UpperCrust Food Show saw over a lakh of eager food lovers from all corners of the city have a gala time, shopping within the vast vast exhibition space, spread across 25000 sq. ft. The very unique trade fair featured some of the finest products and services from the F&B industry as well as an eclectic range of related products by market leaders and renowned brands of the world. This year, the crowd tasted their way through a fine range of teas inclusive of ​Typhoo, Chado, Lipton Green Tea, Te-A-Me, Chamong, Sublime, a variety of international food brands Puck cheese, La Confeteria Delaviuda, Kikkoman, Lady Liberty, American Garden, Monini, Farrell, frozen meats from Zorabian, Cambay Tiger, goat meat from Chevon, Gadre Marine, Kerrygold Cheese from Ireland, exciting flavours of nacho chips from All That’s Good, Cornitos and Salsalito, fruits and nuts like USA Pears, Washington Apples and California Walnuts, Ambrossia Delicatessen​'s ​ premium dates and date products, ready-to-eat Indian delicacies from ​Anoushka Gourmet & Fazlani Foods, cold pressed juices from RAW and JusDivine, Dr Oetker’s Fun Foods, divine marzipan from Nordic Kandie Magic, quality equipment from brands such as KitchenAid, Sleek and Kenstar, and a whole lot more to tempt. Celebrity guests, from actress Tanaaz Irani to thespian Dolly Thakore, restaurateurs Kishore Bajaj, AD Singh, Farrokh Khambatta, Amrish Arora, artist Ajay De and wife Ryoko to interior designer Shahnaz Mahimtura, skin specialist Dr Bindu Sthalekar, the well-known Batra family and Consul Generals only wore smiles as they visited the myriad of stalls and patronised aplenty.

The UpperCrust Food Show is the perfect platform to bring together a multitude of people, educate them, and enunciate the nuances of food and wine, and is as much for the wine lover as for the foodie, so a neat wine alley awaited the visitor, with Reveilo, Sula and Rio among the concise array.

Seeing as how the Show is consistently true to its USP as a platform for innovative entrepreneurs and food lovers constantly looking for something new, novel concepts for upcoming professionals were introduced this year, clubbed together from the Gourmet Junction with names such as Bun Men and Chef’s Basket, the Health Corner with Jiwa and Cheat Clean and Food Bloggers’ Bazaar with Bawi Bride’s Parsi fare, to name a few.

The mega three-day extravaganza had the much-looked-forward to Food Court where visitors kicked back and relished the eclectic fare. From Jafferbhai’s Delhi Darbar, Noor Mohammadi, Sanchos, Wok In The Box, Bong Bong, Bachelors, Being Foodie, and more, along with the unmistakeable voice of musician Kim Cardoz to serenade you right through the evening.

Now for the highlights of the UpperCrust Food Show, the Live Kitchen had the city’s most sought- after chefs displaying their culinary skill and sharing their secrets, and dishes, with you. This year, demos by Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi, Chef Bhairav Singh Rajput, Chef Varun Inamdar, Chef Shantanu Gupte and Chef Shailendra Singh (Food Food), Pastry Chef Anurag Barthwal (Trident BKC), Rushina Munshaw Ghildiyal (APB Cook Studio), Chef Michael Swamy (Cottage Chef Culinaire), Chef Adriano Baldasssare (Oberoi) and Andrea Fidora (Monin) had the crowd wanting more, with recipes from Italian to desserts and sangria, too, demonstrated.

And of course, the UpperCrust Foodhall Celebrity Chef’s Mystery Basket Cookery Contest with Chef Nilesh Limaye (Trikaya), Chef Indrajit Saha (Sofitel), Chef Vikas Seth (Sancho’s), and the first lady to ever participate, Chef Kshama Prabhu (The White Owl) dishing it out for the coveted title, being judged by a gourmet panel inclusive of Corporate Executive Chef of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, Nimish Bhatia, Executive VP Oberoi Hotels & Resorts, Mumbai, Devendra Bharma and Farzana Contractor. Chef Vikas Seth stood proud with his Drama Queen Roulade earning him the first place.
